The Difference Between Laminate & Premask

Before deciding which film to order, let us explain the difference between the two!

LaminatePurpose: Protects the decal long-term and creates an easy application

  • Applied on top of the printed/cut decal permanently
  • Adds protection against:
    • UV fading
    • Scratches
    • Chemicals
    • Weather
  • Eliminates the tape peeling process – clean surface, apply, and move on.

Think of it as: a protective shield

When you should use laminate: Use laminate anytime the decal needs to last in harsh conditions.

PremaskPurpose: Helps you apply the decal

  • Goes on top of the decal temporarily
  • Holds all the pieces/letters together in the correct position
  • Lets you transfer the design from the backing paper to the surface
  • Removed after the decal is applied

Think of it as: a carrier or installation aid

When you should use premask: Use premask anytime the decal has to go on clean, straight, and in one piece.

Some may also prefer to use both as a safe and reliable option.
